About Marietta, GA
Marietta, GA, located in Cobb County, GA, was named for Mary Cobb, wife of renowned U.S. Senator Thomas Willis Cobb. Thomas Willis Cobb served in the senate from 1824-1828 and eventually became a judge of the superior court of Georgia. The Cobbs helped develop the area outside of Atlanta, becoming local legends. Marietta was incorporated as a village in 1834 and a city in 1852, with the booming railroad industry as a foundation. CSX freight trains still run through the city, and a train depot still stands. Today, the health care industry provides the backbone of Marietta's economy, with WellStar Kennestone Hospital the top employer in 2010. Southern Polytechnic State University, Chattahoochee Technical College and Life University provide higher education in Marietta, together serving more than 20,000 students. After 0.7 miles, take a slight left onto South Marietta Parkway Southeast, and continue just more than half a mile to take the ramp onto I-75 South. After 3.6 miles, take exit 259 to merge onto I-285 East toward Greenville/Augusta. Drive for 11.6 miles, and take the GA-141 South/Peachtree Industrial Boulevard exit.
